EIS School Mental Health Clubs

Being the primary program of the Association, EIS further undertakes the following programs and activities to promote mental health among children and youth:

Lakas Isipan ng Kabataan ( LINK) Clubs

and the Youth Life Enrichment Program (YLEP)

HISTORY:

Officially recognized on September 27, 1975 through a "Ninong-Ninang and Inaanak" (Godparents and Godchildren) Ceremony

The the 14 PMHA Chapters organized Student Mental Health Clubs using different names e.g. Human Relations Club, Sinagtala, the Live Wire, etc.

In November 1978, there school mental health clubs were officially called "Lakas Isipan ng Kabataan" (LINK) Clubs as a result of a name contest conducted by the 1978 PMHA Children and Youth Committee. This same year, YLEP had been integrated as part and parcel of the homeroom class in the high school level.

YLEP evolved into a package of 4 modules namely: 1) Self Awareness and Interpersonal Relationship 2) Value Inculcation 3) Youth and Health and 4) Youth as a Family Facilitator.

The 1992 revision focused on the youth's role in the family as well as in the bigger society tackling the five (5) areas of concern of the National Program for Mental Health, namely: 1) Drug Abuse 2) Street Children 3) Overseas Contract Worker 4) Victims of Torture, Human Rights Violation and Violence and 5) Victim of Disaster.

The latest 2001 revision involves inclusion of "Life Skills Enhancement and Drug Abuse Prevention and Education."

At present, LINK Club is the school-based organization which serves as structure for implementing YLEP.

First started in the summer of 1999, the 2-day activity aims to maintain and develop the leadership potentials of our youth, to bring about better spirit of unity, camaraderie, and sense of communal responsibility among LINK Club members.

Every year, the Summer Camp has specific theme to focus the activities on and to address the LINK Club members' interests.

The Institutional Visit

The newest activity which started in 2000, it aims not only for mere charity works but also to lead LINK members to formulate new positive behavior toward less fortunate brethren and to inculcate the spirit of love, service, and brotherhood.

Each LINK Club brings foodstuffs, detergents, old toys and clothes and others stuff gathered from LINK members in their respective schools.

The Regular Monthly Meetings

Member schools take turns in hosting the monthly meetings with an average attendance of 80 per meeting.

This strategy results in great awareness of mental health in schools plus the support of the school administrators and other faculty members.

In every meeting, lecturettes on mental health and mental health-related topics like "Self Esteem," "Good Study Habits," "Caring for your Mental Health," and the like are discussed and randomly selected LINK Clubs share their accomplished activities for the month.
