1. What is Mental Health?
Mental Health is a state of well-being in which the individual
realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses
of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to
make a contribution to his or her society.

2. What is Mental Disorder?
Any of various conditions characterized by impairment of an individual’s
normal cognitive, emotional or behavioral functioning, and caused
by social, psychological, biochemical, genetic and other related
factors.
3. What are the common signs and symptoms of mental disorder?
The early signs and symptoms of mental disorders are:
- Persistent disturbance of sleep
- Loss of interest in activities and responsibilities of previous
concern
- Persistent seclusion of oneself from other people
- Frequent attacks of palpitation usually expressed as “nerbiyos”
and associated with unexplained fears
- Over sensitiveness and excessive irritability
- Constant complain of headaches, numbness of hands and feet
- Frequent attacks of dizziness and fainting
- Exaggerated and/or unfounded suspicions
- Persistent worrying, forgetfulness and absent-mindedness
4. How can we prevent mental health problems?
We can prevent mental health problems by:
- Maintaining a good physical health
- Choosing worthwhile activities and develop a hobby
- Solving problems as they come and avoid excessive worrying
- Cultivating friendship and choose a friend to confide in
- Striking a happy medium between work and play
- Recognizing early signs and symptoms
5. Who may develop mental illness?
Any person regardless of race, nationality, age, gender, civil
status, and socio-economic background may develop mental disorders.
6. Can a person with mental disorders be helped?
Yes, if adequate treatment be given. Treatment may include:
psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy (use of medicine), psychosocial
intervention (play, physical, recreational, occupational and environmental
therapeutic activities).

concern?
