Rehabilitation Services
The Rehabilitation Services operates an out-patient center which provides day care services and vocational activities as well as psychosocial therapeutic activities for persons with mental disabilities.

An outpatient work center which provides day care services and vocational activities as well as psychosocial therapeutic activities for persons with mental disabilities.

Goals and objectives

• Provide holistic therapeutic programs and vocational activities that will help restore, improve and maintain the psychosocial functioning of mental health consumers (MHC) so they may resume their roles as participating members of their respective families and communities

• Serve as a day care facility for mental health consumers who would need re-training in performing Activities of Daily Living which may have been impaired because of their mental health condition.

• Provide programs and activities for families and caregivers to help them understand the treatment process as well as the condition of their mental health consumers through their active involvement.

Programs and Services

1. Life Skills Programs/Occupational Therapy (Entry Level Program)

  

  

Through this program, MHC are taught and re-trained in the following activities of daily living:

• self-care (grooming, hygiene and health care)
• home-making (table setting, meal preparation, washing dishes, house cleaning and room decoration)
• gardening
• practical activities like marketing, cooking, gardening, arts and handicrafts

2. Vocational Activities/Handicraft projects

  

  
Program for MHC who are capable of performing vocational tasks and handicraft activities.

Selected MHC are involved in any of the following projects:

• handicraft making
- candle making
- paper mache
• canteen catering services
• store operation

The MHC are paid for the projects they have finished and have passed quality control.

3. Social Services

  

Aims to provide psychosocial services to the MHC and their families through individual casework, group work sessions, home visits and family sessions.

4. Psycho-educational Program

These are group activities that aim to help enhance the basic cognitive skills of MHC so that they can better explore community resources and apply gained information in their day-to-day life.


5. Programs for the Family

Family Support Group

Meeting of parents, caregivers and the RS staff that provides them opportunities to discuss the progress of their MHC at the center as well as to equip them with better strategies and techniques regarding the care of the MHC.

Family Therapy

  

The program aims to help individual family members resolve issues and conflicts that affect interpersonal relationships between them and the MHC.

Integrated Family Socialization

Social and recreational activities, that promotes positive interpersonal relationships among MHC and their family members.


7. Buffer Program

The RS extends its programs to out-of-school youth and unemployed adults who are members of the Community Mental Health Based Program of the Education and Information Services. They serve as buffer workers who help MHC with handicraft projects and daily living programs.

Eligibility for Admission

1. The Rehabilitation Services (RS) accepts persons who have suffered from psychiatric illness. Prior to their referral to the center, such individual must have shown some degree of emotional stability. He/she must be free from any acute disabling psychiatric symptoms.

2. The individual must be between 18-50 years old.

3. He/She must be referred and endorsed in writing by government or non-government organizations, their private psychiatrists or private individuals.

4. The individual must be free from any contagious disease, physical handicap or deformity, and disturbing symptoms of organic brain syndrome.

5. The individual must have the ability to learn and be trained.

6. The individual must be motivated and willing to participate in prescribed activities.

7. The individual must be living within the Metro Manila area.

Admission Procedure

1. Referral to the RS must be accompanied by a clinical abstract or a psychological report. The report should include a diagnosis, personal history, course in the hospital and his/her present condition.

2. Prior to admission to the RS program, the mental health consumer, together with his/her family members and/or caregivers, will be given an orientation about the RS as well as a tour of the facilities.

3. The following staff will do the admission assessment:

• Social worker
• Occupational Therapist/vocational foreman

4. A two week probation period is given to the consumer/patient to assess if he/she can benefit from the RS programs.
